Episode 008 – PAX East 2013

I’m not sure how but it’s here. After only a few short days of intense PAXing we’ve managed to create not just a regular episode of our traditional podcast but also step it up and join the world of High Definition video. It may not be immediately apparent but it’s pretty incredible that we pulled this off. Personally I’m still recovering from a complete lack of sleep and Justin barely remembers his own name. The crazy thing is that’s after just attending. How the two guys behind Penny Arcade actually run PAX East, PAX Prime and now PAX Aus every year is beyond me. I really need to start exercising or something.

In many ways this is an episode of firsts for us. Not only is it our first video episode but it also has the distinction of being the first time we’ve had a guest on the show. Not just any guest though. His name is Tim Knowlton and he among many other things is an Indie game maker and a member of Run Jump Dev. If you haven’t checked them out then what’s wrong with you? Why do you hate awesome things? Tim is also a very close friend of Justin and myself and I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have on the show as our first official guest. How about a big round of applause for Tim! Oh and if you’re interested you can download his game here.

PAX East is one of those experiences that I look forward to every year but when it’s over I’m not sure how I survived. With the added work of recording this episode in our hotel room and capturing as much footage as we could for the video version it was even more of a challenge. One that we gladly accepted for you our listeners/viewers but it’s possible that it almost killed us. Still we’re so thankful to you for giving us an audience that we decided to bring some convention swag back for you. Listen or watch this months episode for more details. If you own an Xbox 360 then you definitely should make it a point to get a download code. Oh no I’ve said too much. Hurry we only have a few!

I’m surprised Josh didn’t complain more about the technical difficulties we ran into trying to record this podcast. It was one of those situations were almost everything that could go wrong, from beginning to end, did.
We bought pieces of sound equipment that were incompatible with each other.
I personally spent hours and hours trying to make my laptop’s hardware do things it was never designed to do.
When we tried to record the audio, there was a tremendous amount of electrical feedback in the room that we had to track down and eliminate.
In the process of recording the video, 2 of the 3 video devices we were using stopped recording prematurely, which we didn’t discover until we had finished.
Some of the show floor footage we shot mysteriously disappeared – neither of us knows what happened to it.
On top of all of that, since time was so short, Josh has basically spent every waking hour working on this video. To be honest, I haven’t even seen it yet. It’s entirely likely that at least a few of you will watch it before I get a chance. I hope it doesn’t suck.  But even if it does, know this: Next Time Will Be Better. (I think that’s going to be our unofficial motto/mission statement from now on.)

In case you haven’t guessed, I am listening to your podcasts in reverse order. I actually had watched this after PAX, because you know, we talked about it on the tram. I wanted to mention, since you bring it up in the next podcast, that perhaps those that watched were not interested in the HALO free stuff 😉 but that was cool of you
